Antony hits out at VS
Kochi: Defence Minister A K Antony today said Congress would not allow political interference to hamper the probe in the 2G spectrum scam and severe action would be taken against those found guilty.
The CBI is investigating the 2G scam which is also being monitored by the Supreme Court, the Public Accounts Committee and the Joint Parliamentary Committee, Antony told a press conference here.
Over 74 % turnout in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: 74.6 per cent of 22 million electorate in Kerala exercised their franchise Wednesday as voting ended peacefully in all the 140 assembly segments across the state. In the last general elections in May 2009, the turnout was 73.37 percent.
Congress alleges BJP-CPM pact in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress party Sunday alleged that there is a tacit understanding between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) for next week's Kerala assembly polls.
"Reports that the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) withdrew its candidate in Malampuzha where Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is contesting clearly shows there is a tacit understanding between the BJP and the CPI-M," Congress leader Oommen Chandy told reporters here Sunday.
Rahul an 'Amul baby', says Achuthanandan
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthananadan on Sunday hit back at Rahul Gandhi for his jibe at the CPM stalwart on his age, calling him an 'Amul baby'.
Achuthananadan also countered Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his criticism that the Left rule had done serious damage to Kerala and West Bengal, asking him not to speak with 'hangover of a former IMF officer'.
What did state do with Tsunami funds, asks Antony
Kollam: Defense Minister A K Antony flaying the Left Front government raised the question on how the Tsunami rehabilitation fund of Rs 1440 cr was spent in the state. There is no account statements of its expenditure, he said.
The state failed to make proper use of money allotted for drinking-water facilities and employment guarantee schemes, he added. The Left should look towards north to know whether there is progress in the country.
The food security law will come into existence in a few months and 35 kilos of rice and wheat will be distributed at the lowest price very soon, he said.
JDU not to withdraw candidate against VS
New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) Sunday revoked earlier decision to withdraw its candidate against state Chief Minister and CPM veteran V.S. Achuthanandan at Malampuzha.
JD(U), a part of the National Democratic Front at the Centre, decided not to go ahead with its plan after senior leader Sharad Yadav held discussions on the issue with senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj.
UDF will create divisions in society: Prakash Karat.
Kannur : CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today said the Congress-led UDF would create divisions in the society and would check the progress and development of the state.
'A renewed mandate for the LDF in the state was important to the people as well as the entire country for development,' he said during an election campaign of the LDF candidate M Prakashan at Pappinissery.
He said while the Left parties' government had taken a strong stand to defend secularism, the UDF was functioning as a plaltform for all communal and caste forces.
Lathika remark: EC gives clean chit to Achuthanandan
Thiruvananthapuram: The State Election Commission Saturday said there was no violation of electoral code of conduct in the statement on Lathika Subhash made by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan.
The Commission arrived at the decision after examining the video footage of the media conference in which Achthanandan made the controversial comment.
“She (Lathika Subhash) is famous for many things. I don’t have to tell you. You can find out,” the CPM leader had told reporters during a meet-the-press programme. Lathika Subhash, who is the UDF candidate in Malampuzha had complained that Achuthanandan's words amounted to showing were meant to malign her.
Achuthanandan later said the media had misinterpreted the comment he made on Lathika. “Lathika has served as Kottayam panchayat president and PCC member. Holding such positions means she is famous", he said.
