Childhood & Early Roots
Born in Nettoor in Ernakulam district on May 30, 1964, to K. Damodaran Menon and V.J. Saraswathy Amma. He grew up in a middle-class household where education and ethical values were highly emphasized. During his school days, he developed an avid reading habit, particularly interested in politics, history, and social reforms.
Academic Excellence & Student Activism
Completed his graduation in Chemistry from Sacred Heart College, Thevara. He then pursued law, earning an LL.B. from Government Law College, Ernakulam, and an LL.M. from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. During this period, he became actively involved in the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress party, eventually serving as its State Chairman (1987-1988) and later as the Secretary of the National Students Union of India (NSUI).
Legal Practice & Rising Congress Leader
Enrolled as an advocate and began practicing law at the Kerala High Court. Simultaneously, he held key organizational responsibilities, serving as the General Secretary of the Youth Congress and later in the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He established a reputation as a thoughtful legal mind and a brilliant orator.
Legislative Milestone in Paravur
He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2001 from the Paravur constituency, defeating CPI candidate P. Raju. He was re-elected in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. Throughout his tenure, he served on various legislative committees and chaired the Committee on Public Accounts. He consistently raised critical environmental issues, including the conservation of Gadgil Committee recommendations and the protection of Western Ghats.
Leader of Opposition & Policy Reformer
Following the 2021 state assembly elections, he was selected as the Leader of the Opposition, succeeding Ramesh Chennithala. In this role, he repositioned the opposition by presenting constructive criticisms and leading debates on issues like SilverLine K-Rail, AI camera procurement, and administrative transparency. He established himself as an alternative visionary leader for Kerala.
Assuming Office as Chief Minister
On May 18, 2026, V.D. Satheesan took the oath of office as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala, leading a 21-member cabinet under a democratic UDF mandate. His administration is dedicated to progressive development, environmental resilience, digital innovation, and standard-setting administrative ethics.
