Heritage & Formative Childhood
Born on May 14, 1957, in Kozhikode, into the politically historic family of K. Karunakaran and Kalyanikutty Amma. Growing up in a household that was the epicentre of Kerala's political developments, he closely observed state craftsmanship from childhood.
Education and Legal Foundations
Graduated in Malayalam Literature and then pursued law at Government Law College, Kozhikode. He entered political life through the Youth Congress, actively building organizational strength in Kozhikode and Malabar regions.
Three-time Member of Parliament
Elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kozhikode constituency three consecutive times in 1989, 1991, and 1996. He was known as a strong defender of Congress policies in Delhi and championed infrastructural development projects in Kozhikode.
KPCC President and Ministerial Tenure
Appointed as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in 2001. In 2004, he briefly served as the Minister for Electricity in the A.K. Antony cabinet. His political journey during this decade saw intense trials and high-level organizational leadership.
Return to Assembly & Vattiyoorkavu MLA
Returned to the Kerala Legislative Assembly by winning the Vattiyoorkavu seat in 2011 and successfully defending it in 2016. In 2019, he successfully contested to the Lok Sabha from Vadakara, proving his credentials as a versatile troubleshooter for the Congress.
Health and Devaswom Ministries
Won the Nemom constituency in 2026 and joined the Satheesan cabinet as the Minister for Health and Devaswoms. He is driving major enhancements in public healthcare systems, rural medical access, and ensuring the smooth governance of temple institutions under the Devaswom boards.
