Early Life & Formative Years

Born on May 25, 1956, in Chennithala, Alappuzha, to V. Ramakrishnan Nair and Devaki Amma. His early childhood in rural Alappuzha exposed him to agrarian struggles and grassroots community life, laying the foundation for his lifelong political journey.

1970 - 1982

KSU President & Youngest MLA

Pursued economics and later studied law at Government Law College, Ernakulam. His student political journey was spectacular; he became the State President of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and subsequently the President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress. In 1982, at the age of just 26, he was elected as an MLA from Haripad.

1986 - 2004

Minister and Member of Parliament

In 1986, he was appointed as the Minister for Rural Development in the K. Karunakaran cabinet, making him the youngest minister in Kerala history at age 29. He was later elected to the Lok Sabha four times (1989, 1991, 1996, and 1999) from Kottayam and Mavelikara constituencies, working closely with national leaders in New Delhi.

KPCC Presidency & Party Revival

Served as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) for a record contiguous nine years. Under his leadership, the UDF returned to power in the state in 2011, and he organized massive statewide rallies that strengthened the party's organizational network at the grassroots level.

Home Minister & Opposition Leader

Appointed as the Minister for Home Affairs and Vigilance in the Oommen Chandy cabinet in 2014, introducing major modernization reforms in the police force. From 2016 to 2021, he served as the Leader of the Opposition, consistently exposing administrative shortcomings and fighting for democratic rights.
